President Bill Clinton and Former Bush Press Secretary Ari Fleischer Stressed the Importance of Disaster Preparedness and Risk Assessment

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar. 3, 2009-- Leading risk, insurance and security executives from a wide array of industries from insurance and telecommunications to manufacturing and security attended a three-day event hosted by GlobalOptions Group (Nasdaq: GLOI) in Orlando last week. The risk management firm held its Third Annual Executive Forum February 25-27 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Golf Resort, featuring speakers – including the 42nd President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton and former George W. Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer – who outlined the scope of risk management and security challenges, and proposed potential solutions. The event followed two discussion tracks, one that outlined innovation in the insurance and fraud industry – one of the mainstays of GlobalOptions’ business and the industry that comprised the bulk of the attendees – and the other in security and disaster preparedness.

According to Dr. Harvey Schiller, Chairman and CEO of GlobalOptions Group, the event was designed to provide a platform to discuss and provide the opportunity to propose solutions for the wide array of security and risk issues facing companies doing business in the U.S. and abroad. “We were extremely pleased that so many executives attended the event – more than 30 percent more than last year’s event – and were especially inspired by both President Clinton and Ari Fleischer’s addresses, as they, along with the nearly 20 other speakers, framed the discussion of what it means to provide security and mitigate risk in these unprecedented times.”

Among the highlights of the event

• President Bill Clinton reviewed the importance of disaster preparedness, citing both natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and California earthquakes, as well as human-made disasters such as the recent economic crisis that our country currently faces. The President identified both the improvements made in the area as well as the future challenges that our nation faces in terms of preparing for such crises. The President also briefly spoke about the work of his Clinton Global Initiative and the support it provides in areas experiencing natural disaster. • Former press secretary under President George W. Bush, Ari Fleischer recounted his experience on September 11, 2001, when, from visit to an elementary school in Florida, he and the President learned of the attacks on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. He described the large amount of information that needed to be processed quickly during the attack, and that no matter how prepared for crises we may be, there are always going to be unexpected outliers. Throughout his address, Mr. Fleischer emphasized the importance of a well-rehearsed crisis plan and emphasized that crisis preparedness is important at all levels – government, corporate and individual families.

• James Lee Witt, former head of FEMA under President Clinton and CEO of James Lee Witt Associates, GlobalOptions’ Crisis management and Preparedness Services division discussed the importance of crisis preparedness and where we have succeeded and failed in recent years. He emphasized a common sense approach to preparation and management. He also emphasized the importance of communication between business, government and the community, citing that education, crisis mitigation, response and recovery require partnership between these three constituencies.

• Barry Watson, President of Bode Technology Group, a part of GlobalOptions’ Security Consulting and Investigation Group discussed how the use of DNA has changed from pure science application to an important investigative tool and at times even a crime deterrent, and all in the last five years. Mr. Watson demonstrated how these technologies are applied both in crime scene investigation and disaster recovery as well as private sector applications in risk mitigation, such as contingency planning, fraud investigation and verifying the origins of specialty products and food sources. He also indicated how Bode Technology has expanded its capability beyond DNA applications and now provides full forensics applications.

• Bill Polian, President of the Indianapolis Colts provided the closing keynote address, regaling attendees with stories of the complexities of operating a sports organization, not the least of which is ensuring adequate security and insurance coverage of a professional sports stadium. • Throughout the event, GlobalOptions also demonstrated innovations to its proprietary software GlobalTrak. The demonstrations included use of the wide variety of dashboard features that are either currently available or in beta testing to be introduced soon.

“Throughout the event, attendees shared ideas with each other and benchmarked risk mitigation strategies across industries in the same practice areas, such as insurance fraud prevention and forensic investigation, risk mitigation and security, business continuity and safety policies and procedures, while GlobalOptions had the unique opportunity to demonstrate our best-in-class technology and expertise,” said Dr. Schiller.

All speakers’ presentations and a GlobalOptions white paper are posted on the company’s website:
